Internet and Social Media – Class 9 | Unit 5
Unit 5: Internet and Social Media – Class 9 ICT
5.1 Concept of WWW, Browser, Search Engine, URL
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a collection of interlinked web pages and resources accessed via the Internet. A browser is software (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Edge) used to view websites. A search engine (e.g., Google, Bing) helps users find information on the web using keywords. A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address used to access a specific web page (e.g., https://www.google.com).
5.2 Concept of Remote Login
Remote login allows users to access and control another computer from a different location. Tools like AnyDesk and TeamViewer enable remote access for troubleshooting, file transfer, and system management.
5.3 Concept of Protocols (HTTP, HTTPS)
HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) and HTTPS (HTTP Secure) are communication protocols used to transfer data over the web. HTTPS provides secure communication by encrypting the data, often used on websites involving sensitive information.
5.4 Email and Its Uses
Email (Electronic Mail) allows users to send and receive messages and files over the Internet. It is used for communication in education, business, and personal purposes.
5.5 Appropriate Usage of Social Media
Students should use social media platforms responsibly for learning, communication, and creativity. Avoid sharing personal information and always follow safety guidelines when accessing websites.
5.6 Video Conference Tools
Tools like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams enable virtual meetings and online classes. They support screen sharing, messaging, and video/audio calls, making remote collaboration easier.
5.7 Concept of Blogs and Features
A blog is a personal or educational website where content (articles, stories, tutorials) is posted regularly. Features include text, images, videos, comments, and categories. Platforms like Blogspot, WordPress, and GitHub Pages are popular.
Practical Tasks
a) Searching Learning Materials
Use search engines like Google to find articles, videos, or tutorials. Example: Search "Solar system for class 9" to find relevant content.
b) Create Social Media Profile
If age-appropriate, students can create profiles on platforms like Facebook, YouTube, or X. Use them for sharing ideas, learning, and building digital presence.
c) Virtual Meeting Creation
Schedule a meeting using Zoom or Google Meet. Share invite links with others. You can conduct group discussions, presentations, or remote classes.
d) Create a Personal Blog
Use tools like Blogspot or GitHub Pages to create a simple web blog. You can write articles, share class notes, and build a student portfolio.
Summary
This unit teaches students how to use the Internet and social media responsibly. It provides an understanding of tools, protocols, and platforms that shape online communication and education. The practical tasks help students apply this knowledge creatively and safely in real-world scenarios.
